Dampfwerk Distilling is a family-run micro-distillery based in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.
We aim to make the finest European-style fruit brandies and liqueurs, all with an unexpected American twist … contemporary spirits that are meant to be enjoyed in the vibrant company of family and good friends.
Quality. Whether it’s our locally sourced apples or grapes for our fruit brandies—or the premium botanicals in our gin and liqueurs—we source from the highest-quality farms and suppliers.
And Pride. We learned the trade from master distillers in Germany, and use hand-hammered copper stills imported from Germany. In fact, the name Dampfwerk, which means “steam works,” blends the industrial nature of steam power with the delicate extraction process used in distilling.
With a twist. Just like our Loeffelholz family is a unique mix of modern German-American influences, so is our approach to distilling. We take traditional European-style craft spirits and infuse them with a contemporary style and playful attitude.
In fall 2016, we began production on our first batches of Dampfwerk Apple Brandy and Grape Brandy! We are hard at work, fermenting and distilling locally grown Haralson apples and Frontenac gris grapes in our copper still. Then, the brandies will be aged in barrels made of Minnesota oak.
We’re also creating German-style herbal bitters inspired by vintage German Rezeptbücher dating back more than 200 years. Our first bitter, "The Helgolander," is indicative of a liqueur from Helgoland, a small German island in the North Sea.
We can’t wait to introduce these unique products to the American palate!
Check back here for updates on our fruit brandies and other spirits in the lineup, including a London-style dry gin, whiskey and other botanical liqueurs.
Dampfwerk Distilling is owned and operated by the Loeffelholz family—founders Ralf and Mary and their children, Christian and Bridgit.
Ralf, a native of Muhldorf, Germany, spent 25 years building and managing businesses that serve the global food and beverage industry.
“I wanted to put that experience to the test and build something that I am personally passionate about—combining traditional European-style ’edelbranntweine’ craft spirits with the creativity of the American market,” says Ralf.
Mary, a Minnesota native and senior executive for Delta Air Lines, brings expertise in international operations. Their college-age children, Christian and Bridgit, are actively involved in the distillery—whether it’s on the production or marketing side, or keeping an eye on the family’s resident “distillery dogs”, Rudi and Olli.
